I hope toolkit1 has worked for you, and that you now understand the principles of Standard Notation. There's a lot more to learn, of course - the bass clef / reading and writing chords, for instance - but that should come easily if you've made it this far.
It's hard to avoid stating the obvious - taking this to a really useful level is simply about practice, so use notation wherever and whenever you can, and keep being methodical in your approach to each new task until you find that you don't need a method any more. It will happen.
